Match : Roma vs Liverpool
Competition : UEFA Champions League
Time / Date : 21:45h / 1 May 2018
Venue : Stadio Olimpico
Roma managed to bounce back from their heavy Anfield defeat on Saturday too, thrashing Chievo 4-1 at home to consolidate their spot in the Serie A top four. Edin Dzeko bagged a brace in that game to make it 16 Serie A goals for the season too, adding to his seven Champions League goals.
Now they are chasing a 5-2 deficit from the first leg but will draw on their experience from the last round where they beat Barcelona 3-0 in the second leg to advance to the semi-finals on the away goal rule. Can lightning strike twice here?
Liverpool are the clear favourites and have already shown in the knockout phase of the competition they can not only protect first leg leads, but build on them. After beating Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, they travelled to the Etihad and won 2-1.
Grégoire Defrel (Distortion of the ankle), Diego Perotti (Distortion of the ankle), Rick Karsdorp (Cruciate Ligament Rupture), Kevin Strootman (Rib bruise)
Adam Lallana (Unknown Injury), Emre Can (Back trouble), Ádám Bogdán (Cruciate Ligament Rupture), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Knee injury), Joel Matip (Hamstring Injury)
Roma have won four, drawn one, and lost three of their eight previous meetings with Liverpool, although prior to last week’s 5-2 win for Liverpool the most recent competitive meeting came back in 2002 when Liverpool beat them 2-0 on aggregate in the Champions League knockout stages.
We must expect Roma to respond in the same way as they did to Barcelona in the quarterfinals. Liverpool’s defense is not the best in the world, so the hosts have a chance to get closer to the deficit.
Unlike their previous opponents, Liverpool present substantial threat to Roma’s defense. So, it is almost impossible to keep the likes of Salah, Mane and Firmino from scoring.
Therefore, punters must concentrate on picks from the goal markets.
